Real Madrid have made a shock loan offer for Manchester United defender Guillermo Varela, according to sources in Italy.
Varela joined United last summer for around £2m from the Uruguayan side Penarol, but he is yet to make an appearance for the club.
And now, according to TMW, Madrid are preparing to take the 21-year-old right-back on loan for the season with a view to a permanent deal.
It is reported the Spanish giants would be willing to pay around £4m to make the deal a permanent one next summer.
As of yet United have given no indication they would be selling to Varela, who still has four years remaining on his current contract.

Manchester United and Chelsea hold discussions over Leicester target Gabriel Barbosa and Thiago Maia
Leicester City target Gabriel Barbosa and the highly-rated Thiago Maia have been discussed in meetings between Santos and officials from Chelsea, Manchester United and Atletico Madrid.
The Brazilian club are feeling out the market for two of their most coveted young players. Barbosa has been subject to a £23million bid from the Premier League champions, while there is also interest from Inter Milan, Juventus and Barcelona in him.
Maia, a defensive midfielder, has played 44 games for the Brazilian giants since making his first team debut in 2014.
’We had productive conversations,’ Santos president Modesto Roma said to Goal.
’We didn’t come to buy or sell players, neither in London or Madrid. We came to build up relationships.
’There weren’t offers, but we did talk about partnerships. I talked to Manchester United, Chelsea and Atletico Madrid.’
Barbosa, also known as Gabigol, has informed Santos that he wants to be sold to a club in Europe by the end of the summer transfer window.
The 19-year-old striker and Maia are currently competing for Brazil at the Rio Olympic Games in their home nation.
Gabigol burst onto the scene at Santos by scoring 21 goals in both 2014 and 2015, while he has also struck five times in 10 games for his club in the national championship since the start of the 2016 campaign.
Brazil take on Colombia in the quarter-finals of the football at the Olympic Games on Sunday.

Tucudean, who becomes the Addicks’ seventh signing of the summer, has penned a three-year deal with the Championship club.
The 23-year-old jetted out to Spain on Monday to Charlton’s training camp before undergoing his medical and signing his contract.
He came to prominence during his time at former club Dinamo Bucuresti and has represented his country at Under-21 level.

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has moved a step closer to a move to Barcelona after the clubs announced “productive talks” had been held over the transfer.
Anfield chief executive Ian Ayre met officials from the Catalan club on Wednesday, and further talks are planned.
Barcelona know the Reds will not allow the Uruguayan to leave in a cut-price deal, despite his four month worldwide ban from football, but all parties are keen to reach a quick agreement.
It is expected the fee will top £70m for the striker who was voted PFA Player of the Year and FWA Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year for his Premier League exploits last season.
“The talks were productive, with sensible expectations on both sides," an Anfield source told PA Sport. "Further talks and discussions will take place in due course. Nothing is finalised as of now."
Liverpool were adamant before negotiations began they would not sell Suarez for less than the value of his confidential buy-out clause, believed to be anywhere between £70m and £80m.
And the club remains confident following Wednesday’s discussions a deal can be done in line with their valuation.
Barcelona have the option of offering Chile forward Alexis Sanchez as a makeweight in negotiations, and it is understood at this stage negotiations are taking place considering both options: a straight money deal and also the option of a player-plus-cash alternative.

Daniel Sturridge has described his England team-mates as ‘winners’ and saluted their mentality following the Three Lions’ 3-0 victory over Peru.
The Liverpool striker opened the scoring with a wonderful effort – his fourth at international level – but insisted that while many continue to write off England’s chances, they are heading to Brazil in the right frame of mind.
“For everyone it is not about going there [Brazil] to make the numbers up," Sturridge told ITV.
"I am a winner and the players are winners – it doesn’t mean we are going to win it out there but we are winners."
England may have eventually coasted past their South American opponents, but they were made to work hard during the first half as Peru sat deep.
“It was difficult to be fair because they defended well and they were very compact,” Sturridge continued.
"We had worked very hard throughout the week and there wasn’t the match sharpness as much as we would have liked.
"But it was great to be out there and we are happy with the result."

Real Madrid may have lacked possession against Bayern Munich but it made little difference as Karim Benzema gave his side a 1-0 lead in their Champions League semi-final.
A flu-ridden Gareth Bale could only make the bench at the Santiago Bernabeu with fellow superstar Cristiano Ronaldo replacing him in the starting 11.
However, neither Madrid darling could, nor would, have made a difference against the already crowned Bundesliga champions early on, as Bayern totally dominated the ball.
But for all their ’tika-taka’ style under Pep Guardiola it brought no reward as instead Los Blancos produced a counter-attacking masterclass.
The first real chance came for Bayern when former Real winger, Arjen Robben fizzed an effort just past the post via a Pepe deflection.
But with the Santiago Bernabeu nervily expecting a goal for the visitors, suddenly they erupted in joy as Ronaldo led a rapid counter-attack, fed compatriot Fabio Coentrao, who then easily picked out Benzema for the easiest of finishes on 19 minutes.
The goal galvanised the hosts and both Ronaldo and Di Maria could have immediately doubled their tally only to waste breakaways.
However, neither was as surprising a miss as what came next from Ronaldo when the Portuguese star somehow blazed over from 12 yards out with no defender in sight.
Bayern finally mustered a worthwhile attempt on goal when Philipp Lahm was picked out by Rafinha, only to find the angle too tight and fire into the side netting.
Immediately Ancelotti’s side hit back with another surge forward, but this time another glaring miss followed, as Di Maria in acres of space chested the ball down but then viciously volleyed high over the bar.
Bayern seemed dazed by their lack of cutting edge and almost gifted Real a second when bumbling defending from Neuer and Dante required the goalkeeper to tip Ronaldo’s effort round the post.
Robben did finally get a glint of the goalkeeper’s eyes when he burst through the middle but the Dutchman snatched at his effort, firing into Casillas’ arms.
At the other end Ronaldo’s frustrations in front of goal continued when quick thinking got the superstar in on goal, however, Jerome Boateng made the angle too tight as Neuer beated away the forward’s strike.
The former Manchester United man’s involvement soon ended when he substiuted for Bale, as the Bernabeu roared its latest star on to the field, but the Welshman’s invovlement was meagre.
Guardiola’s side continued to look toothless in attack, though Mario Gotze almost found a crucial away goal late on, when the German slammed an effort towards goal that Casillas just managed to repel.
At the death Bayern and Thomas Muller screamed for a penalty when Xabi Alonso appeared to take the German down but it was a 50/50 challenge and would have been harsh on Madrid.

Nike and the Nigeria Football Federation today unveiled the home and away kits that will be worn by the Super Eagles during the 2016/17 international soccer calendar.
The green home and white away jerseys use Nike’s AeroSwift design that his being used for all of the American firm’s federation kits this season. The only detailing on the v-neck shirts are contrasting blocks on the rear collar and ventilation stripes running down their sides.
A Nigerian football team captained by Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel will wear versions of the kits without the NFF badge during the 2016 Rio Olympics. The 1996 Olympic gold medalists kickoff their tournament against Japan on August 4.

“Ascendió pese a no jugar mucho.
