Daniel Sturridge has described his England team-mates as ‘winners’ and saluted their mentality following the Three Lions’ 3-0 victory over Peru.
The Liverpool striker opened the scoring with a wonderful effort – his fourth at international level – but insisted that while many continue to write off England’s chances, they are heading to Brazil in the right frame of mind.
“For everyone it is not about going there [Brazil] to make the numbers up," Sturridge told ITV.
"I am a winner and the players are winners – it doesn’t mean we are going to win it out there but we are winners."
England may have eventually coasted past their South American opponents, but they were made to work hard during the first half as Peru sat deep.
“It was difficult to be fair because they defended well and they were very compact,” Sturridge continued.
"We had worked very hard throughout the week and there wasn’t the match sharpness as much as we would have liked.
"But it was great to be out there and we are happy with the result."
